Flying with paratroopers - Volare con la Folgore

My flight activity takes place almost entirely at Valdera airstrip, home of the Aeroclub of Pisa. The airstrip however is also the training place for paratroopers of the Folgore Brigade of the Italian Army.

Cohabitation is very easy, but also special: it is not uncommon to have to execute multiple holding because the runway is occupied by paratroopers landing. Despite for Italian law communications and even to have an aeronautic radio in the aircraft is not mandatory for ultralight pilots, it is in these moments that you really learn how you have to be professional even if you fly for fun. To coordinate the activities of a military helicopter, from which every twenty minutes at least ten paratroopers jump just above the airfield, with that of dozens of amateur pilots is not a trivial matter, but it is also a pleasure to fly and see the paratroopers at the same time hover in front of you, safely.

Today for the second time I flew solo, after a few missions in dual control because of the strong wind of recent days.

In the video you can enjoy the Tuscan landscape from above on a beautiful spring day as today was and, at the end of the video, you can see the paratroopers landing just behind the runway. To speak while your whole brain is dedicated to the commands and to the instruments was eventually easier than I imagined, perhaps because from the beginning of my training my instructor had always cared a lot about proper aeronautic communication.

Being able to really interact with professionals, although it is normal thing among AG pilot, used to juggle into airspaces increasingly complex and crowded, it was definitely very formative for me and made ​​me realize how high the quality of the education that I am receiving is and how it is thin the "shadow line" between the AG and the world of ultralights.

A special thanks, so, goes to Ercole, my instructor, and to all the members of the Aeroclub, that allow with their experience even to a novice like me to deal with the professionals without acting like a dummy!

La mia attività di volo si svolge quasi interamente presso l'aviosuperficie Valdera, sede dell'Aeroclub di Pisa. Nell'aviosuperficie si allenano però frequentemente anche i paracadutisti della brigata Folgore dell'esercito italiano. La convivenza è molto tranquilla, ma anche particolare: non è raro dover eseguire svariati circuiti di attesa perchè la pista è occupata da paracadutisti in atterraggio. Nonostante nel volo VDS la comunicazione radio non è obbligatoria, anzi non lo è manco avere una radio sull'aereo, è in questi momenti che si impara davvero quanto bisogna essere professionali anche nel divertimento. Coordinare l'attività di un elicottero militare, che lancia ogni venti minuti circa 10 paracadutisti proprio sopra il campo di volo, con quella di decine di piloti della domenica non è cosa da poco. E' anche una soddisfazione però volare e vedere contemporaneamente i paracadutisti che ti volteggiano davanti in tutta sicurezza. 

Oggi per la seconda volta ho volato da solista, dopo qualche missione di doppio comando a causa del forte vento dei giorni scorsi.

Nel video potete godere il paesaggio toscano dall'alto in una bella giornata di primavera come quella di oggi e, alla fine del video, potete vedere i paracadutisti che atterrano proprio dietro la pista. Gestire le comunicazioni mentre tutto il cervello è rivolto ai comandi e agli strumenti è stato alla fine più facile di quanto immaginassi, forse anche perché sin dall'inizio del mio addestramento il mio istruttore ha sempre tenuto molto alla fonia. 

Poter interagire davvero con dei professionisti, per quanto sia cosa normale tra i piloti di AG abituati a destreggiarsi tra spazi aerei sempre più complessi e affollati, è stato sicuramente molto istruttivo e mi ha fatto capire quanto sia alta la qualità dell'insegnamento che sto ricevendo e quanto sia sottile il limite tra il mondo dell'AG e quello del volo ultraleggero.

Un ringraziamento speciale quindi va al mio istruttore Ercole e a tutti i membri dell'Aeroclub, che con la loro esperienza permettono anche a un novellino come me di convivere con dei professionisti!
